Welcome! We are actors, artists, birdwatchers, chanters, chess players, cooks, cyclists, dancers, gardeners, health-and-wellness pursuers, hikers, knitters, meditators, musicians, pet lovers, photographers, poets, quilters, readers, singers, travelers, volunteers, walkers, woodworkers, and yogis, and we would love to add your diversity to our community! If you’re interested in a vibrant, intergenerational neighborhood in a small thriving city located in the heart of the gorgeous Shenandoah Valley, there is a place here for you!

Harrisonburg Cohousing is proceeding with our new neighborhood, Juniper Hill Commons. We own our 5.4-acre site, have received rezoning approval, and are thrilled to have construction contracts starting now that we have met – exceeded! – our threshold of 15 committed households. We will break ground in 2022. Our beautiful neighborhood includes 27 homes, a common house, and about half of our acreage is set aside for gardens, kid play, and native habitat.

See our website to read member bios (and maybe meet your future neighbors?), peruse our proposed site and house plans, and add yourself to our newsletter so you can keep up with our progress. We offer online info sessions monthly – sign up for one on the events page of our website, above. These sessions make it easy for you to find out more about our progress, group, and homes. And if you’re in the area, we’d love to take you on a tour of our property.

About Harrisonburg:
Harrisonburg is a small city with about 54,000 people, two universities and a hospital. “The Friendly City” (Harrisonburg’s nickname) is a refugee resettlement area, and we are proud to say that about 17% of our citizens were born outside the country. This supports a thriving, dynamic economy, and we enjoy interesting restaurants and cultural activities, like our annual International Festival (which has been held for more than 20 years). It’s a great place to raise kids, with a dual language public school program available (half day taught in Spanish, half in English), the nationally acclaimed Shenandoah Valley Children’s Choir, and the rockin’ Explore More Children’s Museum.

Surrounded by the picturesque Shenandoah Valley, Harrisonburg offers many recreational opportunities, from hiking in the Shenandoah National Park and George Washington National Forest, to rafting or tubing on Shenandoah River, skiing at Massanutten Mountain, and cycling with the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition.

Harrisonburg just keeps on winning awards and recognition, including:
• Gold Medal Governor’s environmental Excellence Award (2021)
• One of the Best Cities to Live in the South after the Pandemic (Business Insider, 2020)
• Top 10 best places for millennials to move to in the US (Reviews.org, 2019)
• Top city to start a business in the U.S. (Pennygeeks.com, 2018)
• One of the “15 Affordable Small Towns We Love” (Southern Living, 2017)
• One of the “25 Best Places to Retire” (Forbes, 2017)
• One of the “20 best Mountain Bike Towns” (National Geographic, 2017)
• Listed among “30 Favorite Towns in America” list (Travel and Leisure, 2016)
