After 30 years developing his 20-acre permaculture farmstead in northeast Washington state, Bezaleel Israel, known to his many friends as BZ, is preparing for the next phase of his farm’s existence: Facilitating the transition of the farm to become a Community Land Trust and Eco-village.
A group of regional permaculturists, all involved in one capacity or another with the Inland Northwest Permaculture Guild, are collaborating with BZ to bring about this next stage of the farm’s evolution. We have formed the Permaculture Conservation Trust that will eventually hold title to the land and provide for its perpetual stewardship.
The eco-village consists of 7 acres of arable, drained wetland, 4 acres of upland arable fields, gardens and orchard and 9 acres mixed conifer woodlot. It is located 3 miles south of the Canadian border in the northeast corner of Washington State. There’s a main dwelling with large kitchen and bathroom. The main dwelling has a year-round wood-heated greenhouse (woodstove heats the house, the greenhouse and the domestic hot water). There is a 900 sq. ft. shop and a 20′ x 50′ hoophouse. It has been farmed consistently for nearly 30 years using organic methods and permaculture practices.
We are looking for mature, responsible, non-violent, communicative, compassionate, debt-free folks who have experience in regenerative agriculture and have a firm grasp of permaculture principles and permaculture practices. The pursuit of cultivating those values in your life and livelihood, even if imperfectly, and to illustrate by example their benefits to the greater society must form the central core of your being and fuel your underlying motivation.
You must have had experience with the simple, rural, outdoor-oriented lifestyle and the work ethic that goes along with it.
You must have faith in, commitment to and experience with living in intentional community. Intentional community experience could include shared living spaces like shared houses or apartments, co-housing, communes, cooperatives, collectives, organized houseless encampments and squats, etc. It would be very helpful if you have faith in, commitment to and experience with the consensus decision-making process.
